Facebook’s Messenger allows you to set the delete timers on the messages in the secret chats. Telegram and Signal have introduced the disappearing for a long time. Now WhatsApp has also decided to jump into the arena and join it’s competitors. They are introducing the disappearing messages from today.
Unlike the Messenger and Telegram you are not required to start the secret chat for activating the disappearing messages. With this new feature both the sender and recipient will be able to activate the disappearing mode for one-to-one chats plus the admins can tweak it in the groups. WhatsApp allows you to disappear the messages after a week. You are not able to tweak the seven days time frame.
The main objective of disappearing messages from WhatsApp is to feel as close to in-person as possible, which means they should not be glued there forever. With this feature you can make your conversation feel lighter as well as private. In one-to-one chat, either person can activate the disappearing messages ON or OFF.
WhatsApp was working on disappearing messages for about a year now. In the experimental stages there were options to make the messages disappear within 5 seconds or an hour after reading but then it was decided by WhatsApp that they should go with the seven days time frame.
Here are some of the details about this feature
- If a user does not open WhatsApp in a week time, the message will disappear. However, the preview of that message may still be displayed in the notifications till WhatsApp is opened.
- If the disappearing message is forwarded to a chat with the disappearing message option turned OFF then the message won’t disappear in the forwarded chat.
- When a reply is sent to a message, the initial one is quoted. If you reply to the disappearing message then the quoted text might remain in the chat after the week time period is over.
- If the user creates backup before a message disappear then the disappearing message will be included in the backup. The disappearing message will be deleted when users restores from backup.
