Serena Williams in Search of Her 24th Grand Slam Title

Day 2 of US Open probably the greatest tennis player of the modern era will play her first match in Arthur Ash Stadium. This US Open is on mute mode and Serena will not be welcomed by more than 23,000 fans the way she has since her first US Open win 21 years ago against the then World No. 1 Martina Hingis.

Serena Williams, 38 has only one mission and that is to win the 24th Grand Slam and she has got all the chances to win her 24th title as 6 of the top 10 players have decided to not participate in the Grand Slam due to COVID-19 which include defending champion Bianca Andreescu and the top two Ashleigh Barty and Simona Halep. Williams has not won any grand slam for almost last 4 years. Last time when she won a grand slam, Trump has spent just few days in the Whit House. Serena Williams is only one behind the all-time Grand Slam lead of Margaret Court. She has won 23 major titles and six of them are US Open titles. Lat time she won a grand slam was in Australia in the year 2017. After that she appeared in four grand slam finals, two at Wimbledon and two in New York but she finished as runner-up in all four of them. In the first-round match Williams will face fellow American Kristie Ahn, 28. She is ranked 96th and has not faced the mighty Serena before.

1999 – A Star was Born

In 1999 Serena Williams took the world by storm when she defeated World No. 1 Martina Hingis 6-3 7-6. It was her first Grand Slam and with this win she became the 1st African American woman to win a Grand Slam in Open era. In the semis She defeated the defending champion Lindsay Davenport.


2002 – Williams vs Williams

In the year 2002 Serena Williams who was ranked No. 1 defeated her sister and two times defending champion Venus Williams 6-4, 6-3. Serena was invincible at that time. This victory of Serena was her third consecutive Grand Slam title. It was also the 2nd consecutive title for Serena without losing a set.


2008 – Regained The Top Spot

Serena won her 3rd US Open Grand Slam after defeating Serbian Jelena Jankovic in the final with 6-4, 7-5 score. This was the third time Serena won a grand slam without losing a set. After winning the title she also regained her No. 1 position for the first time since 2003.


2012 – The Greatest Comeback

Serena Williams snatched her 4th US Open title from the hands of Belarussian Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. At one point Azarenka was on match point and was leading 5-3 in the 3rd set but Serena came from behind and won the match. This final match was the first one after the 1995 final between Steffi Graf and Monica Seles that went to three sets. After winning the US Open in 2012, Serena became only the 3rd woman in Tennis history to win Wimbledon, Olympics and US Open in a the same season.


2013 – Recap of 2012

It was the recap of 2012 final as Serena the defending champion was facing Victoria Azarenka once again. She defeated the Belarussian 7-5, 6-7, 6-1. Williams only lost one set in the entire tournament and that was in the final to Azarenka. This was Serena’s 5th US Open title and her total tally reached to 17 with this win.


2014 – Ruthless Serena

Two times defending champion Serena was ruthless in the 2013 season as she did not lose a single set in the whole tournament. Same was the case in the final when she defeated Danish player Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-3. This was the 18th grand slam for her.
