Royals Challengers Bangalore lost the eliminator to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday and Gautham Gambhir, former Indian opener and has won two IPL titles as captain has slammed Virat Kohli for putting up a poor show. He said the Kohli is not delivering for 8 long years. He said that he has no personal grudge with Kohli but it is time Kohli takes the responsibility of the RCB’s title-less in IPL.
Gambhir added that CSK and MI’s captains Mahindra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma respectively have been leading their sides for a long period just because they are delivering. Gambhir asserted that Mumbai Indians management would have been removed from the captaincy if he had failed for 8 long years.
He said that eight years is a long time and look at R Ashwin who was captain of KXIP for two years. He did not deliver and was removed by the management. Former Indian opener also said that the problem and accountability start from the top and not from the management or support staff. He slammed Kohli by saying that You are the leader, you are the captain. When you get the credit, you should also take the criticism as well.
Gambhir: Kohli must put his hand up and be accountable
He was of the view that RCB lost 5 games in a row adding that they were lucky enough to win the Super over eliminator against Mumbai Indians. After losing to Delhi Capitals, RCB qualified for the playoffs on the basis on better run-rate than KKR. After this loss, Kohli said that they deserved to qualify for the playoffs as they have played good cricket. Gautam Gambhir said that you can keep saying that we have qualified for the playoffs and we deserved to be there but they did not deserve to be there. If you look at last four to five games and the Super Over game against MI, RCB was very lucky that Saini bowled the super over brilliantly.
Gambhir was also surprised to see Kohli opening the inning with Devdutt Padikkal in a crucial game against SRH on Friday. This move from Kohli was more interesting as Aaron Finch was also included in the playing XI. This experiment of Kohli to come as an opener failed as Kohli departed after scoring only 6 runs. Gambhir said that Kohli should have opened the inning throughout the tournament if he wanted to bat at the top. Royals Challengers Bangalore have to wait for 2021 for the IPL trophy as their dreams of lifting the trophy has been shattered by Warner XI.
RCB has reached in three finals in 13 editions. First time they reached into final in 2009 when IPL was played in South Africa. They lost to Deccan Chargers by 6 runs. Second time they reach the final in 2011. the final was played in M.A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. CSK won that final by 58 runs. In 2016 RCB played their third final but they lost it to SRH by 8 runs. Chasing a target of 208, RCB ended up at 200 for7. Gayle scored 76 runs of 38 balls.
