Qatar Open – Roger Federer returns with a win in Doha After year-long layoff

Roger Federer has started his 24th season with a win after being absent from the action for more than one year. This win was not an easy one as his opponent Dan Evans pushed him hard for victory at the Qatar Open. Federer won the game 7-6 (8), 3-6, 7-5 on Wednesday.

Federer was back in action after more than 400 days. He suffered a knee injury following the 2020 Australian Open. After the win, Federer said that it feels very good to be back in the court. The match lasted for almost 21/2 hours which tested the stamina of 39 years old Swiss athlete after a long break. Federer saved the set point when he was 6-5 down in the first set tiebreaker and then saved two breakpoints at 3-3 in the final and deciding set before winning the game with the break of Evans’ serve.


Federer revealed that he used Evans as his training partner as he was preparing for his comeback. He played more than 20 sets against Evans in the previous weeks. The 20 times Grand Slam winner, Federer said that it has been a very difficult road for him. It has been a huge challenge for him in his tennis career and coming back at this age is not very simple.

In the next round, Federer will play Nikoloz Basilashivili in the quarterfinals. The Georgian player Basilashivili beat Malek Jaziri 6-2, 6-2. the top seeded player in Qatar Open Dominic Thiem beat Aslan Karatsev 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 and cemented his place in the quarters.
