Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has created a history as she has become the first Indian weightlifter to win silver medal at the Olympic Games. She is also the first Indian to win an Olympic medal at 2020 Tokyo Games in 49kg category of women.
Zhihui Hou of China has won the gold medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting category at Tokyo Olympics. She lifted a total of 210kg, on the other hand Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah won the bronze medal. Mirabai Chanu managed to lift 202kg weight in the women’s 49kg category. She is the second Indian weightlifter after Larnam Malleswari to win Olympic medal.
In her first attempt, Mirabai Chanu started with an 84kg lift at Tokyo International Forum. Later she improved with an 87kg lift that put her in advantageous position in competition. Her momentum was cut short one Zhihui lifted 88kg in her first attempt. In her third attempt, Zhihui set a world record by lifting 94kgs. Last time in the Rio Olympics, Mirabai had a very poor run but then in 2021 Asian Weightlifting Championships she set a world record of 119kg in clean and jerk.
