Messi was frustrated by Barca’s humiliating 8-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in Champions League Quarter Final. He wanted to exercise an option in his contract that will let him leave on free transfer. But La Liga said that the option had ended in June and any team who wants the services of Messi needs to pay $835 million fee.
For the time being Messi will remain with Barca where he was polished and was made a world class player. He won four UEFA Champions League trophies as well as 10 La Liga titles. In an interview with Goal.com, Messi said, “ I always said this was my home and it was what I felt and feel.” He also added “To decide there was somewhere better than here was difficult. I felt that I needed a change and new goals, new things.”

Messi was absent from the training camp this week. Barca is going to play the season opener against Villarreal on 26th September 2020. In modern days football, for a player to remain in one club his whole career is highly unusual. Messi’s rival Ronaldo started with Sporting Lisbon and then moved to Manchester United, Real Madrid and now to Juventus.
