Rajasthan Royals has announced that they are appointing former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakara as the director of cricket for the 2021 season of Indian Premier League (IPL). Sangakara who is the president of Marylebone Cricket Club, will oversee the whole cricketing ecosystem of Rajasthan Royals which include auction plans, coaching structure, team discovery as well as team strategy. He will also oversee the development of the Royals academy in Nagpur.
After his appointment as the director of cricket, Sangakara said that it is an honor to join Rajasthan Royals and said that he is very excited about this new challenge. He added that he has enjoyed speaking to the leadership of Jaipur based T20 franchise. He Hasid that the team has got some of the best players in the cricketing arena at the moment.

Sanju Samson, the newly appointed captain of Rajasthan Royals praised Sangakara and said that he (Sangakara) has an exceptional cricket career and he understands the modern game as well. He further added that it will be great to have wicketkeeping legend with the team. It will be fantastic to learn from the great man who has led the Sri Lankan team with grace for years.
Kumar Sangakara has scored more than 28,000 in an illustrious 16-years long career. He had the highest batting average for any player in the last 46 years. Sangakara was also part of the first 5 editions of IPL. In the inaugural IPL season, he started his IPL journey with a classy fifty against Chennai Super Kings. In the inaugural season he scored 320 runs in 10 games and helped his team i.e. KXIP reached the semifinals.
