A staggering opening stand between Jonny Bairstow and skipper Davis Warner helped Sunrisers Hyderabad to set an impressive target of 202, and then defending this total their bowlers helped them clinch a sensational 69 runs victory over Priety Zinta’s KXIP. However they were challenged at one stage by the Caribbean Nicholas Pooran’s hammering. But then after two run outs and a gripping bowling show from Rashid Khan (3/12) turn it in favour of SRH.
The Most Destructive Opening Pair of IPL
Warner and Bairstow opening pair is considered as the most destructive opening pair of IPL. When you think of an Aussie and an Englishman in one dressing room you can expect a dispute but the two mentioned above have great and exemplary companionship. In the last season of IPL these two have four century opening stands and were responsible for the almost 60% of the team’ total score. They were not clicking this season but against KXIP at the Dubai Cricket Stadium they find that magical partnership. Despite a vivacious start from Warner, there came a phase when he was struggling with his timing. Bairstow sensed it and decided to take the charge. The main feature of Bairstow’s brilliant performance was his impressive footwork and the ease with which he was playing the spinners and medium pacers. Bairstow was hitting straight and was refraining from playing across the line. The aggressive behavior from the Yorkshireman eased the pressure on the skipper who tried to put pressure on the opposition by taking some quick and hard singles and doubles. Both of them eventually made their 5th opening stand of more than 100 in IPL. They were sailing smoothly and at one point they were well on course to break their best opening stand of 185. but then Warner fell for 52 runs off 40 deliveries. Warner-Bairstow managed to score 160 runs in 15 overs. Jonny Bairstow also fell in the same over to young leggie Ravi Bishnoi (3/29)
2 in 1 for Young Bishnoi
Chasing the 202 KXIP’s start was not good as at one stage they were 58/3. They are were struggling when Nicholas Pooran came who has not shown his true colours in this year’s IPL. Sunil Gavaskar, during the KXIP and DC match said that among all the overseas players, he is most excited to see how Pooran will play this season. This Trinidadian had a great Caribbean Premier League and he has good reputation in the shorter format for West Indies. He was looking off-colour till date but on Thursday, Pooran finally showed what he is capable of as he came up with a batting show that can numb any bowling attack in the world. Unfortunately, Pooran had not got any support from the other end and they ended up on a losing side. The main pillars of KXIP i.e. KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal who were scoring most of the runs for the team, had an off day and they went early. Pooran’s innings was a pure class as he was in total control of all the strokes he played. The highlight of his inning was when he snatched 28 runs in an over. He made 77 off only 37 deliveries with seven towering sixes. But he was sent to the dugout in the 15th over by Rashid Khan who ended the game with an impressive figure of 3/12.
