Apple has switched it’s default camera formats for the photos and videos from JPG to HEIC (High Efficiency Image Format) with iOS 11 in order to save space on the phone. When you share your iPhone photos as well as video to your laptop, you will realise that it cannot open them as it is in HEIC file format which is not very widely supported.
HEIC saves the quality photos in smaller sizes compared to JPG file format and it sometimes become very annoying to convert HEIC images into JPG. Apple also does not give any option to change default setting in the camera app. You need to go to Settings in order to switch formats. For converting photos HEIC files to JPG formats you are required to follow these simple steps.
- First of all, go to Settings on your iPhone.
- Now tap on the Camera and you will be shown some options like Formats, Grid, Preserve Settings and Camera Mode.
- Tap on the Formats and change the format from High Efficiency to Most Compatible.
- Now all of your photos will be saved as JPG automatically instead of HEIC.
One thing should be noted here is that the photos that have already been clicked will remain in HEIC format and only the newly clicked photos will be saved as JPG.
