Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling played a vital role in England’s victory over their arch rivals Germany. England defeated Germany 2-0 and cemented their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2021.
The stage was set at Wembley for the tense last 16 game and first Sterling struck with 15 minutes remaining and then Kane ensured England’s first ever knockout stage victory against the German since 1966. 55 years ago, at the same arena, England defeated Germany 4-2 in World Cup final. But after that victory they were defeated on numerous occasions. England was shown the doors in 1970, 1990 and 2010 World Cups by Germany. Germany also defeated England in Euro 96 semi-finals at Wembley.
England showed an impressive display of skills capped by some staggering finishes from Sterling who has now scored three goals in Euro 2021 and Kane on the other hand has scored his first ever goal of the competition.
England’s journey in this Euro Cup edition has been flawless as they have not conceded any goal yet. They will now travel to Rome for the quarter-final match against Ukraine on Saturday. This was only the second knockout stage victory in European Championship for England and the first ever against Germany since 1975.
On the other hand it was an anguishing end for the German manager Joachim Loew as he is preparing to step down after the tournament.
