The unseeded British teen Emma Raducanu in her second appearance at a Grand Slam tournament went from a qualifier to champion at the 2021 edition of US Open. She faced another teenager Leylah Fernandez from Canada. She became the first ever player to go from preliminary qualifying round to win the major title in the professional era. In the final Emma beat Leylah 6-4, 6-3 at the Flushing Meadows.
The British teen won all the matches at US Open without losing a single set. She won all 20 sets in New York, six in qualifying and 14 in main draw. She is the first woman to win single championship without losing a single set since Serena Williams in 2014. This was also the first major final between two teens since Williams 17 beat Martina Hingis, 18 in 1999. this was the first final between two unseeded players.
Emma Raducanu is the first British woman to win a Grand Slam since 1977 when Virginia Wade won Wimbledon. She is also the youngest player to win a women’s major title since Maria Sharapova who was 17 at Wimbledon in 2004.
