Lovlina Borgohain from Assam has created history on Friday as she reached the semi-finals of the women’s 69kg welterweight division and has assured herself of at least a bronze medal. She will be the third Indian bozxer and second Indian woman to win an Olympic medal after Mary Kom at London Olympics 2012 and Vijender at Beijing Olympics 2008.
Lovlina Borgohain is from Mukhia Village in Assam’s Golghar’s district. She was with her ailing mother last year when all the other Indian boxers were attending national camp as she was hospitalized for nephrological ailments. She also helped her father in the paddy fields. Lovlina Borgohain is a two-time world championship bronze medalist and she has got Arjuna Award in 2020. She is the first Assamese girl who has qualified for Olympics. In 2012, Lovlina began her boxing training at Netagi Subhas Regional centre in Guwahati under the supervision of Padum Boro.
